John's Events:

Q. How do I register for a John Friend event?
A.
Mouse over the Events tab on the top of the main buttons of any page of our website and select John's Events from the drop down menu. Select the event you wish to apply for by clicking on any of the text in the event schedule. Next, select Apply, located on the details page for that event. Enter your username and password to access the online application. If you have not attended an event or purchased an item from us previously, then please register to create a profile along with your username and password. You will be notified of your status in the workshop by the notification date listed on the event's details page, at which time you will be given payment instructions if you are accepted into the event.

Q. Why do I have to apply online for a workshop?
A. We often receive hundreds of applications for events, far exceeding capacity of the venue, so John chooses the most qualified applicants.

Q. How does John determine who will be accepted into an event with him?
A. John reviews all of the applications and selects those who meet all of the prerequisites if applicable, have the most Anusara yoga experience, and are best suited for that particular event, in order to best serve the community.

Q. Is one Mixed Level or Intermediate Advanced workshop the same as all others? Are they different at each event?
A. Workshops at each location vary. The diversity that you will get at each event will help to expand your knowledge.

Q. Will the Mixed Level workshop be challenging enough for me?
A. Yes. John will design the sequencing and the pacing of the class to accommodate all levels. Sometimes variations on certain poses are given to challenge more advanced students. Interestingly, John has certified teachers and advanced students who also elect to do the Mixed Level workshop. It is structured so that any student will gain benefit from the classes.

Q. I am a beginner. Would John’s Mixed Level workshop be appropriate for me to take?
A. Yes, it is designed for all levels including first time students. John often has experienced and certified teachers assisting him in the Mixed Level, and all beginners will be given individual attention.

Q. I have an injury, therapeutic needs, or physical limitation. Would it still be appropriate for me to attend one of John’s events?
A. Please contact our Workshop Registration Coordinator by email or phone to give more detail and your situation will be assessed. Please consult your physician if you have an injury or physical limitation that may have an impact on your performance.

Q. There is an upcoming event with John, but the details are not listed on the website. How can I obtain this information and how can I register for the event?
A. We are currently working on the details and logistics for all of John’s future events. We will post the details as they are confirmed. We do ask that you please check our website periodically to see if the details have been posted.

Q. I don’t have internet access. How can I apply for registration for a workshop?
A. We can assist you by phone with registration. However, please note that we communicate electronically. If you are accepted into a workshop, a notification email is sent with a payment link and a receipt for your payment is sent via email as well. If you do not have internet access, you will need to call us after the notification deadline has passed to inquire about your status and to continue the registration process from there.

Q. Do I have to submit a separate application for each workshop? Can you use information submitted from a previous application?
A. It is necessary to submit a separate application for each workshop, as each application is applied to our system via the application and saved into our history.

Q. Do I have to answer all the questions on the application?
A. Yes, unless the application states otherwise, please answer all of the questions on the application.

Q. If an application deadline has passed, can I still submit my application online?
A. Yes, and we encourage you to do so in case there are any available spots still open, or in the event that spots become available.

Q. When will I hear if my application for a workshop has been accepted?
A. The notification of acceptance is usually sent two weeks after the application deadline. If more than two weeks has passed since the application deadline, please contact our Workshop Registration Coordinator. Also, the notification date is posted on each details page for each event.

Q. Can I apply to take only one session or one day of a Weekend Workshop?
A. The Weekend Workshop is considered to be a complete experience in itself. All the sessions are progressive and build upon each other. In the first class, John will lead everyone from the beginning, introducing the Universal Principles of Alignment. Each session will go deeper into these fundamental principles. Furthermore, the class as a group will be able to experience the whole weekend by supporting one another and sharing in the ever-expanding magic of the weekend throughout each class. You are welcome to show up on the day of the event and register, and at this point you can ask to pay for only one day or individual sessions. However, if you chose to wait to apply until the day of the event, you are not guaranteed a spot.

Q. How much will I miss if I do not attend all sessions in a workshop level?
A. Each session builds upon the last. The morning session will help build the foundation for the afternoon session each day.

Q. Can I observe a level of a Weekend Workshop? Is the cost the same as attending as a participant?
A. Yes, you may apply to observe a workshop through our online application process. The cost to observe is half the cost of attending that workshop.

Q. Can I apply to observe on a class-by-class basis of a Weekend Workshop?
A. Yes. The cost is half of the cost to attend on a class-by-class basis. Space availability for observing at certain venues may be limited, so please check with our Workshop Registration Coordinator for details for each particular event.

Q. Do certified Anusara yoga teachers pay to observe a Weekend Workshop?
A. No. However, please note that you must practice as a full participant in one level in order to observe the other level.

Q. Can I observe a Teacher Training?
A. Generally only certified Anusara yoga teaches can observe one of John’s Teacher Trainings.  If you are not certified and you would still like to observe, please mark it on your application and John will make the decision as to whether you may observe. The cost to observe is half the cost of the event.

Q. I have done yoga for many years and would like information on how I may assist John at workshops.
A. Only certified Anusara yoga teachers can assist John at a workshop. If you are a certified teacher, and you wish to assist, please contact our Workshop Registration Coordinator.

Q. I am a certified Anusara yoga teacher, and I would like to assist John in a workshop. How are assistants selected?
A. If you would like to assist, a request should be sent to our Workshop Registration Coordinator. John will then review the requests, and choose someone should he need an assistant at that particular event. John will give the certified teacher(s) in the local community first priority when selecting his assistants

Q. Why have I received an acceptance letter after the event I attended has already passed?
A. We must have an application on record for every individual who attended the event. If you happened to register at the venue and did not submit an application beforehand, one was created for you. The acceptance notification emails are automatically generated and sent out upon application to an event.

Q. How do I apply for a scholarship for one of John’s events?
A. The scholarship applications are found on the website in the Events menu. All applications must be submitted two weeks prior to the payment deadline in order to be considered. The scholarship application may be downloaded from our website.

* Please do not pay for an event for which you have applied for a scholarship before you have heard whether the scholarship has been granted. The scholarship application cannot be used as a means of refund once payment has been made for an event.

Q. How will I be notified if my application for scholarship has been accepted?
A. After you have applied for an event and accepted to attend, John will review the scholarship application and you will be notified by email of the amount that has been awarded.

Q. Can I apply for a scholarship for events with other Anusara yoga teachers?
A. The offer of scholarship is for John’s events only and cannot be used for any events held by any of our teachers. Please contact the teacher directly to inquire about what financial assistance may be available for his or her particular event.

Q. How can I pay online once I have been accepted for an event?
A. Inside the acceptance notification email, a link is provided which will direct you to the page where you can pay through our secure online store.

Q. Why am I waitlisted if I applied for an event five months ago?
A. You were waitlisted because there were others who had more Anusara yoga experience or who were better suited for the event based upon the information you provided in your application. Acceptance is not based on  a first-come, first-serve basis, rather acceptance is based on the information in your application. We do fill spaces, as they open, from cancellations and non-payment from our waiting list.

Q. What number am I on the waitlist?
A. Our waitlist is not in numerical first-come, first-serve order. When a space becomes available, all applicants on the waitlist are reviewed again and the most qualified student is then chosen.

Q. What is John’s workshop cancellation policy and am I entitled to a refund?
A. You have up to 24 hours before the workshop to cancel in order to still receive a refund less an administrative fee. If you cancel, you may not substitute a friend in your place. Any openings in a workshop will be filled from our waiting list. (Refer to your acceptance email notice to determine the amount of the fee and refund for that particular event for which you applied.) Due to the cost for Dharma Talks and kirtans, there is no refund for cancellations.

In order to receive a full refund, there must be extreme circumstances.
You may not apply credit for cancelled events to any other events.

Q. If I cannot attend all four sessions of a workshop for which I have been accepted, can  I put in someone else of my choosing?
A. You may not substitute someone else in your place. If a vacancy becomes available, then an individual from the waitlist will be chosen.

Q. If I am registered for more than one workshop and l have to cancel both of them, will I be charged an administrative fee for each workshop?
A. No. The administrative fee charge is for the total amount of both workshops. (Ex: An attendee is approved and paid for a Mixed Level and an Intermediate/Advanced Level workshop at $150 each). Instead of an administrative fee of $30 each, the total fee is $45.

Anusara Yoga Studies and Teaching:

Q. What is Anusara yoga?
A.
Anusara (a-nu-sar-a), means “flowing with Grace,” “flowing with Nature,” “following your heart.”

Founded by John Friend in 1997, Anusara yoga is a school of hatha yoga which unifies a life-affirming Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness with Universal Principles of Alignment. Anusara yoga is growing quickly all over the world with over 250 certified teachers, 750 licensed Anusara-Inspired yoga teachers, thousands of teachers in training, and hundreds of thousands of students world-wide. Anusara yoga now has a presence on every continent throughout the world, excluding Antarctica. Click on our About Anusara tab on our website to read more.

Q. How does Anusara yoga differ from other schools of hatha yoga?
A. Please reference previous question, “What is Anusara yoga?”

Q. Is Anusara yoga compatible with my Christian faith?
A. Most of our American students have a Christian background. Anusara Yoga is a practice to recognize, align with, celebrate, and serve the One Supreme Spirit/Consciousness/Energy that is the essence of everything that we experience in this world. Through practicing Anusara Yoga and its life-affirming Tantric philosophy, the highest virtues of the heart - peace, love and joy - are cultivated through our recognition and co-participation with this Universal and fundamental Spirit/Consciousness/Energy. Furthermore, along with great health and vitality, the various techniques of Anusara Yoga promote the fostering of human qualities such as compassion/understanding, truth/honesty and friendliness/kindness. These qualities of the heart can greatly help to deepen anyone's religious faith, highest virtues, and ability to offer themselves in devotional service of something greater.

There could be a potential philosophical conflict, though, depending on the beliefs held by a Christian practitioner. A foundational idea of Anusara Yoga philosophy is that the truest essence of all beings is believed to be this fundamental and universal Spirit/Consciousness, which is intrinsically good. In other words, all of life is, at its fundamental level, good/auspicious. Goodness is the absolute nature of the Universe.
However, it is a common Christian doctrinal idea that people are, in fact, inherently sinful, and the only way to salvation is through the Grace of the savior Jesus Christ. This is quite different to Anusara Yoga's belief that people are inherently good, and that Grace is both flowing through the hearts of all beings as well as throughout the world around us.

At the same time, Anusara Yoga recognizes the beauty of all religious and philosophical outlooks that celebrate the goodness and the divinity of life. The example of Jesus Christ and his message of love and goodness is very compatible with the open-hearted ideals of Anusara Yoga.  As a practitioner of Anusara Yoga, one is not required to espouse every aspect of its philosophical basis. Rather, one can use the universal metaphors of the uplifting Tantric teachings as ways to learn about, recognize, identify and enhance the highest ideals of their own heart and personal faith. Any student, no matter his/her religious affiliation, is always welcome to attend Anusara Yoga classes.

That being said, if a person is looking to become a certified Anusara Yoga teacher, that person does need to align with the metaphysical outlook and Tantric philosophical basis of the method, regardless of his/her personal religious affiliation. They can still be a Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, etc., but a certified Anusara Yoga teacher is required to adhere to the philosophical doctrine of the method.

Q. How should hours studied with John be recorded?
A. Students and teachers are expected to keep track of their own hours. A credit hours form may be downloaded from the website to assist you in keeping a record of your hours. This form can be found under the Curriculum tab in both the certified and Anusara-Inspired yoga teacher Curricula.

Q. How do I locate an Anusara yoga teacher or studio in my area?
A. You can visit our website to view the Teacher’s Directory. Here you will find a complete display of all of our licensed teachers, both certified and Anusara-Inspired, along with their contact details and locations.

Q. Is it correct that John is not offering any Teacher Trainings this year, and why?
A. John requests that students who wish to further their studies seek out a certified Anusara yoga teacher who is offering Teacher Trainings.

Q. How do I locate Teacher Training seminars in my area?
A. To obtain information on Teacher Training classes, you can search Regional Events on the Events tab of our website to look for a training near you.

Q. I have attended an Anusara Yoga Level 1 Immersion (or another specialized event such as a Teacher Training, or Therapy Training). If I attend another of the same type of event, will it be the same?
A. Our Immersions are standardized at 100 hours so every Anusara Yoga Immersion offers the same curriculum. We do recommend that teachers renew their understanding every several years by taking another Anusara Yoga Immersion. Our Teacher Training curriculum will be standardized very soon. Therapy Trainings may focus on various areas so please check with the certified teacher offering these types of trainings.

Q. What are the differences between an Immersion and a Level 1 Teacher Training?
A. Teacher Trainings and Immersions are 2 very different programs. The Immersions focus on the philosophy and principles of Anusara yoga, and the Teacher Trainings offer instruction on how to teach Anusara yoga. This is why Immersion studies are prerequisite to Teacher Trainings.

Q. How do I obtain information about your Teacher Training/Certification program?
A. Information regarding Teacher Training seminars may be found on our website under Events/Regional Events. Information regarding our certification curriculum and licensed Anusara-Inspired curriculum may be found on the Curriculum tab of our website.

Q. Where should I begin in the Certification Program?
A. You should first start by accumulating as many hours as you are able with a certified teacher or John. Please visit the Curriculum section of our website for complete details.

Q. How can I get certified if I don't have any Anusara yoga teachers near me?
A. Some travel may be necessary and it will take you longer to become certified than if there was a teacher living in your area. We understand and it is alright if it takes longer to gain the required hours. As Anusara yoga continues to grow, more teachers will be available in different areas.

Q. How can I apply to become an Anusara-Inspired yoga teacher?
A. You can find the application and other required documentation on the website under the Curriculum tab. The application can then be submitted to us by email, mail or by fax.

Q. What can I do to start a home practice?
A. We offer several home practice media products to begin a personal home practice. Please visit our online store. We recommend setting aside a quiet, dedicated time each day that you can devote 45 minutes to an hour to. Then you can work on increasing the amount of time you practice once your routine is established. Please feel free to inquire about getting a copy of John’s Asana Practice Program.

Q. I did not record my hours of Anusara yoga studies previously. What should I do when applying for advanced studies where this is required or for our licensed programs?
A. We request that you do your best to estimate the hours on event applications. For our licensed programs you are required to track your own hours. If in the event that you have extenuating circumstances, please contact Teachers Support. Since we do not track hours with your certified teachers, we are not able to confirm your studies with teachers other than John. Please ask the teacher(s) that you need to confirm your hours with directly.

Q. I am applying for my RYT with Yoga Alliance. How can I get a letter stating that I have taken X Anusara yoga hours with John?
A. Anusara yoga is recognized as a registered school of yoga with Yoga Alliance. All of our licensed teachers may provide Yoga Alliance with a copy of their license agreement to prove that they meet the required hours for RYT 200 for Anusara-Inspired yoga teachers and RYT 500 for certified teachers. If a teacher needs further confirmation of their hours with John, they can contact Teachers Support with a detailed list of their hours with John. We can then format that information into a letter from Anusara for them to provide to Yoga Alliance.

Q. What is the best way for me to begin using heart-oriented language in my teaching?
A. The best way to begin using heart-oriented language in your teaching is by practicing, along with seeking the advice of a certified Anusara yoga teacher. You may also find the following helpful forms in the certification area of our Curriculum section on our website: Video Self-Evaluation form, Video Assessment form. You may also reference and download the ‘Elements of an Anusara Yoga Class’.

Q. What is Anusara’s relationship with Yoga Alliance?
A. Anusara yoga is a registered school of hatha yoga with Yoga Alliance. All of our licensed teachers may provide Yoga Alliance with a copy of their license agreement to prove that they meet the required hours for their RYT 200-hour program for Anusara-Inspired yoga teachers under their Anusara-Inspired listing and for the RYT 500-hour program for certified teachers under their Anusara listing.
