Professional Background
B.S. from Augustana College (Illinois) 1971; J.D. from John Marshall Law School (Chicago, Illinois) 1975; M.A. in Human Development from St. Mary's University (Minneapolis, Minnesota) 2005; licensed and currently practicing law (part time) in Colorado.
Yoga Background
I started practicing yoga after a long history of athletics, which included college football (I was a 230 pound lineman and a center for Ken Anderson, the Cincinnati Bengals™ All-Pro quarterback), martial arts (three black belts), and participation in marathons and triathlons. I began my yoga practice in the Iyengar tradition in 1998 and my curiosity and interest in yoga led me to eventually begin the regular study of Anusara yoga. I found Anusara yoga when my daughter-in-law, Caitlin, suggested that I try a class at City Yoga in Los Angeles, a studio where she practiced. I soon met Douglas Brooks and then, almost immediately after that, I met John Friend. My path became clear. There is a tremendous satisfaction in sharing the blessings I've been given in my life and inspiring students to find their hearts and expand into their potential. I am so grateful to all my teachers.
Questions and Answers
Q: What other hobbies do you have aside from yoga practice?
A: I was a full time attorney for years and still practice on a part time basis; I'm not sure that can be called a "hobby" although it does provide a great outlet for creativity and allows for service of a different sort. When I'm not in Denver or on the road, I love spending time at my home in the Colorado mountains (Winter Park) where I ski, mountain bike, hike, or simply stare at the beauty. I still love martial arts and keep looking for time to begin practicing again.
Q: What is the title of a book that you have read recently that you could strongly recommend?
A: "How Yoga Works" by Geshe Michael Roach and Christie McNally was wonderful; a different but fun approach to yoga. I'm also enjoying "Deshi" ny John Donohue - a philosophical martial arts thriller (I figured I would throw out a title or two that we don't often hear about). In this particular book, part of a series, the Sensie teaches the student to soften and open to the world around him (where have we heard that?)
Q: What is one of your all-time favorite movies?
A: "Being There" with Peter Sellers is probably my all-time favorite movie. It is so full of metaphor, all suggesting a beautiful expansiveness, culminating in Chance walking across the pond at the end - what an amazing ending! Local Hero is a pretty close second.
Q: What is one place that you would like to visit in the world? Why?
A: China: I studied China in college and want to get a hit of how the Chinese view life. I've been to Japan and found that experience enlightening. The Chinese, of course, are a different people, yet I anticipate that the experience will be similarly enlightening, with differences.
Q: What's your favorite color?
A: The combination of purple and yellow. I have no idea why; the combination is stunning to me.
Q: What award in high school should you have won?
A: Most spectacular quantum shift (I was a 230 pound football player, tough hood kind of guy who hid my good grades to fit in). Virtually nobody predicted I would become a lawyer nor that, later I would become a yoga teacher.
Q: What is one of the funniest incidents that occurred in one of your yoga classes?
A: Whenever I try to "mirror" when I give an instruction - the whole front row typically shakes their head or nods to let me know if I have it right.
