Professional Background
I live on the island of Martha's Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts, where the natural beauty of the land and sea is reflected in the hearts of the people in the community. I spent 19 years in the landscape gardening field, the last seven of which I was the owner of my own business. My experience in growing green things informs my understanding of "Root to Rise" in a very literal way! In addition to my love of Anusara Yoga, I enjoy exploring the beaches and trails of my home with my husband Jeremy "JerBear" Norton and our dogs, cooking and sharing nourishing food with friends, travel, good chocolate, and the music of the Grateful Dead.
Yoga Background
I was first introduced to the magic of Anusara by my friend Peter Goodman. It was love at first asana! I had been practicing hatha yoga for a few years, but never found a teacher or style that had moved me so deeply. I had turned to yoga for stress relief from the pressures of owning my own business, and discovered that the stress really lay in my unfulfilled desire to help people heal. I set the intention to become an Anusara yoga teacher in 2003 and began a 200 hour training with Deb Neubauer in 2004. It was a deeply transformative experience. I followed this with Level 1 and 2 Teacher Trainings with John Friend in 2005, and have continued to study under John, Deb, and other gifted and inspiring Anusara teachers. It is my great privilege to be able to use the Universal Principles of Alignment to help students heal chronic pain and injury, and a joy to see the smile on someone's face when they realize their intrinsic goodness in a class.
Questions and Answers
Q: What other hobbies do you have aside from yoga practice?
A: I love cooking from cuisines the world over, especially if it's spicy! I am involved in volunteer organizations in my community, and love films. Traveling and meeting people in the Anusara community is one of my favorite things to do.
Q: What is the title of a book that you have read recently that you could strongly recommend?
A: hmmmm....just ONE? When the Body Says No - Dr. Gabor Mate, How to use Herbs, Nutrients and Yoga in Mental Health Care by Dr. Richard Brown...and my all-time favorite go-to book...The Gift by Hafiz.
Q: What is one of your all-time favorite movies?
A: Shakespeare in Love. No wait - Fierce Grace. No wait - Lord of the Rings. No, wait...Almost Famous. No, wait...
Q: What is one place that you would like to visit in the world? Why?
A: For a travel loving Sagittarius, this question is a tough one. I really enjoy traveling, and would like to go to India to visit the homeland of yoga. Specifically, Ganeshpuri, India, and the Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram. The roots of the philosophy that underlies Anusara yoga are alive there. Also, Ireland, because it's the homeland of my ancestors.
Q: What's your favorite color?
A: Deep, dark, rich purple.
Q: What award in high school should you have won?
A: The one most likely to "Ride the Wave of Grace from Bottom of the Ocean to its Sparking Crest". Or something like that. I'm a bit of a late bloomer.
Q: What is one of the funniest incidents that occurred in one of your yoga classes?
A: I was videotaping a class in preparation for the Anusara Certification process in an exquisite studio with arching French doors that open up to a beautiful meadow. It was a warm, humid day, and all three sets of doors were wide open. During the centering before the invocation, just as I asked the students to close their eyes and deepen their breath, the distinct odor of skunk began to permeate the studio. It lessened over time but was quite noticeable at the beginning. Somehow, I managed to work the skunk odor into the theme of pulsation!
