Yoga Background
Wendy began studying and practicing yoga consistently in 1990 after a decade of occasional classes. Her commitment was motivated finally by nagging low back pain and the discovery of a remarkable teacher, Treya Forlenza, an Iyengar-influenced Feldenkreis practitioner and student of Vedantist Jean Klein. After three of years under Treya's tutelage, including teacher training and apprenticeship, Wendy began teaching in 1993. In 1995 she began attending classes regularly with Denise Benitez, who remains her primary teacher, and through whom she was introduced to John Friend and Anusara Yoga. She attended John's advanced workshop at Inner Harmony in 2001 and knew she'd found the practice, philosophy and community that felt like home. Wendy had enjoyed practice intensives and therapeutic workshops at the Iyengar Institute of San Francisco with Judith Lasater, classes and workshops in Seattle and San Francisco with Gary Kraftsow, Rodney Yee, Kathleen Hunt and Theresa Elliott. This varied background added up to a healthy dose of Iyengar, a dab of Viniyoga, and a dalliance with Ashtanga, all of which coalesced in a devotion to Anusara. Wendy has been a licensed massage practitioner since 1995 and had a thriving practice in Seattle using a blend of deep neuromuscular, craniosacral and relaxation techniques. She retired from massage in 2006 to dedicate herself to OmTown Yoga and her own yoga studies.

Questions and Answers

Q: What other hobbies do you have aside from yoga practice?
A: I live in the Northwest for the proximity to the Cascade and Olympic Mountains, Breitenbush Hot Springs, and the San Juan Islands. These favorite places provide exquisite hiking, backpacking, bicycling, and retreat-ing. One couldn't ask for more. I love travel of all kinds from road trips to Andean adventures to Parisian holidays.

Q: What is the title of a book that you have read recently that you could strongly recommend?
A: Anatomy Trains by bodyworker Tom Myers, a smart, concise look at the fascial network as an organizing principle of the body by a brilliant anatomist/Rolfer/teacher.

Q: What is one of your all-time favorite movies?
A: The movies that I've been crazy about and seen 5-10 times are: The Wizard of Oz, Psycho, Bringing Up Baby, Apocalypse Now, North by Northwest and Casablanca. Go figure.

Q: What is one place that you would like to visit in the world? Why?
A: Florence, Italy (currently at the top of a very long list)

Q: What's your favorite color?
A: Purple

Q: What award in high school should you have won?
A: The most likely to leave Pittsburgh and never look back

Q: What is one of the funniest incidents that occurred in one of your yoga classes?
A: Being locked out of the building on a warm summer evening and taking the class to the nearest open, grassy area--the cemetery a block away. The jokes that evening were predictably macabre but the teaching opportunity was rich.
