Professional Background

Yoga Background
Rita has been interested and involved in her yoga practice since she took Richard Hittleman`s book on yoga postures with her on vacation to a beach in Negril, Jamaica in 1976. Living in various cities on the east and west coast enabled Rita to have exposure to a wide variety of teachers. While her early career in civil engineering required long hours and lots of travel, yoga classes and practice became more and more critical to sustain a balanced life.

While living in Washington, D.C., and New York City, Rita was a student of several Iyengar teachers including Liz Marx. She worked with John Schumacher, owner of the Iyengar-certified Unity Woods Yoga Center in Washington, D.C., in a teacher training program, and was a student of Mary Dunn at the Iyengar Institute in New York City. Whenever weekends and summer schedules permitted, Rita left the city to study with John Friend and other devotees of Gurumayi Chidvilasananda at Shree Muktananda Ashram in the Catskills of New York. Rita has also studied with and has been influenced by several yoga teachers in weekend workshops and yoga conferences including Barbara Benough, Ana Forest and Rodney Yee.

After many years working as a civil engineer, Rita decided to change careers. Every year she returns to Shree Muktananda Ashram in South Fallsburg to continue her studies in hatha yoga and other spiritual disciplines.
