Professional Background
After stints in Prescott College, Ariz., and the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, I graduated from the Univ. of Minnesota in Photojournalism, finally finding a career that would indulge my appetite for encountering new people, places & ideas as well as being artsy. I left my native Minnesota to come to Colorado as a news photographer for a paper in Colorado Springs, and never left. Since then I`ve worked in freelance photography, TV & news production, community relations & volunteer management, & batik art. The arrival of children in my life brought a shift in my lifestyle (surprise!) and my work...it has all been prep for teaching yoga!
Yoga Background
My first yoga class was in the early 70`s, and although I only dabbled in it in the 70`s & 80`s, the seeds were planted. It was only a matter of time before I came home to the practice in 1991, after moving to Monument and finding a class nearby.
I was a new mom and loved the opportunity to become still and centered for at least a small portion of my week! As I got deeper into the practice, and came to appreciate the breadth of wisdom in Yoga, I was always talking it up to my friends. It seemed like the natural thing to do to begin teaching after my teacher moved away, and my youngest child was approaching school age. I did my first teacher training in 1999 and began teaching "eclectic" classes. Then a bout of serious illness derailed me for awhile. When I attended my first Anusara workshop in spring of 2000, I was magnetically attracted to this life-affirming, empowering style of practice, and found a teacher in Jamie Allison. She has informed and inspired me as my practice has blossomed. Of course,I`ve also studied with John Friend whenever possible, and am very grateful for his incredible spirit, energy and wisdom in bringing Anusara to the yoga world. Desiree Rumbaugh and Anthony Bogart are other Anusara teachers with whom I have studied a lot. I am grateful to all of the above teachers for their guidance. My learning continues, especially in therapeutic yoga.
Questions and Answers
Q: What other hobbies do you have aside from yoga practice?
A: being outside...the Rockies rock!...hiking, downhill & x-c skiing, gardening, swimmimg, spelunking, biking, hula hooping, and if I GOTTA be indoors, then reading, dancing & music. Also, annoying my children with funny accents (they said I should add this).
Q: What's your favorite color?
A: purple
Q: What is one of the funniest incidents that occurred in one of your yoga classes?
A: well..........this actually occurred in a dream: Three students sat on a couch in the back of my class eating yogurt out of little cartons as I was trying to get class underway. They were yakking and carrying on and in general just refusing to get with the program. I shared the dream with my students the next day, and they kept threatening to go get yogurt when the going got tough.
