Professional Background

Yoga Background
1976 was the year I first took a yoga class at the Himalayan Institute in Glenview, Illinois. I was 22 years old. At the time I was extremely ill and was in and out of hospitals. Unfortunately at that time I could not keep up with the yoga classes. It took me 17 years to try another yoga class. I was living in a small town in southern Colorado. I was in an emotional crisis, a physical crisis, and I felt the walking and aerobics I was doing just weren’t giving me a sense of fulfillment and inner peace.

In this small town the yoga classes were very casual. Many times I was the only student. Sometimes I would have to call the teacher and beg her to do a class. At that time I worked on the road sometimes up to 8 months of the year. I had to take responsibility for teaching myself. When I would come home I would make my friends do yoga with me if there was no class that day. My nickname was “Relentless”. I have always had a desire to teach and share things that have worked for me. Making the decision to teach yoga was the easiest and purist choice I have ever made.

In 1997, after moving to Pueblo, I received my first certification to teach yoga with the Yoga Institute of Colorado. It was a magical time for me. When I came home I felt enough confidence to open a yoga school. I began to go to Yoga Journal Conferences and the Southwest Yoga Conference and additional weekend workshops in New Mexico and Colorado. My yoga school has advanced from 3 students in a rental space to 19 classes a week in my own building. In March of 1999 I took my first teacher training with John Friend. It was then that I felt I had found my teacher. Since then I have tried to study with him or one of his teachers as often as possible.

Q: What is one of your all-time favorite movies?
A: Arabian Nights

Q: What is one place that you would like to visit in the world? Why?
A: Greece

Q: What's your favorite color?
A: White

Q: What award in high school should you have won?
A: Most likely to be a Gypsee.

Q: What is one of the funniest incidents that occurred in one of your yoga classes?
A: I had my 9-year-old adorable and sweet nephew, Elijah, in town for a week of vacation. He came to all of my yoga classes. He repeatedly heard me say many things, most notably tuck your pelvis. One evening at home I was doing the dishes and I heard my husband and my nephew enjoying a little “male humor”. They were discussing “weenies” and such. Glenn mentioned that really a weenie is called a penis. Elijah said, I know what a penis is, Aunt Marcee talks about that all the time in yoga class. By this time I am down the stairs waiting to hear this little tid-bit. Elijah continued, “You know, when she tells everybody to tuck their penis.” Glenn and I could barely control our selves. I said to him, “You know Elijah, only boys have penis’s.” Elijah said, “Yea… I wondered about that!”
