Professional Background
Lynne Paterson began her study of hatha yoga in 1979 in Boston and has been a devoted student for over 20 years. She has studied with and been influenced by many of the worlds` foremost teachers of the Iyengar tradition -BKS Iyengar, Patricia Walden, Karin Stephan, Dona Hollennan, Gabriella Guebliarro, Manuso Manas, and Rodney Yee.

Ms. Paterson has lived and taught yoga classes in Boston, Miami, and Ottawa, Canada. Lynne currently resides in the Hilltowns of Pioneer Valley, of Western Massachusetts.

A certified Anusara yoga instructor since 2003, Lynne trained with Deborah Neubauer(1996-2003) who introduced her to both the teachings of John Friend and Siddha Yoga. In 1998, Ms. Paterson received a Yoga Teacher Certificate from Ganga White and Tracey Rich of the White Lotus Foundation. Lynne maintains a regular daily meditation and pranayama practice. "My first Iyengar yoga class with Karin Stephan was truly remarkable -it was the very first time that my mind became totally still. I knew yoga was for me...for life! I fell in love with it! I took six classes a week, for two years. The first class I ever taught was to substitute for Patricia Walden. I also studied Mahayana Yoga with a Korean Buddhist yoga teacher and practiced Kundalini Yoga in Boston. I practiced yoga throughout my entire pregnancy. I did shoulder stands into my eighth month -until I could no longer breathe upside-down! I had a great birth! Then my yoga transformed into the path of motherhood and my teaching took a backseat. Since meeting John Friend, in 1997, my passion for yoga was re-ignited. I knew I had no choice but to return to teaching yoga. The message of Anusara yoga is so great, so uplifting, and so joyful that I can hardly wait to get up in the morning to practice. The method demystifies the complexity of Iyengar Yoga, my students grasp the principles so easily and this makes teaching a pure delight. I am so grateful for Deb and John and their boundless inspiration, support and teaching.

Questions and Answers

Q: What other hobbies do you have aside from yoga practice?
A: I love to write poetry. We studied poetry in second grade, everyone hated it except me. I was fascinated. I never pursued that actively. Then several years ago, I discovered Rumi, Hafiz, and Neruda, and have been writing love poems ever since. I grew up in an active family. We skied, played tennis, hiked, and sailed. I love skiing! Whenever it snowed we skipped school and went to the slopes. I taught my daughter, Nichole, to ski. She is now on the high school ski team. I also love to swim, my grandmother was a great swimmer.

Q: What is the title of a book that you have read recently that you could strongly recommend?
A: Play of Consciousness by Swami Muktananda changed my perspective on spiritual seeking forever. I no longer have any doubt that one can go all the way.

Q: What is one of your all-time favorite movies?
A: "On Being John Malchovich" Oh to be able to see the world through another person's eyes!

Q: What is one place that you would like to visit in the world? Why?
A: I love to travel. My favorite places are remote islands with long isolated beaches. I just get lost walking those beaches… I am in my elements around the ocean, sun and surf. I would love to go to Indonesia and island hop.

Q: What's your favorite color?
A: Color is amazing... god`s palate so rich... nature`s shades ever changing. Who could have only one? Violet, temple gold and emerald green are contenders.

Q: What award in high school should you have won?
A: The Most Likely to Find God. I was very philosophical in those years. I just grew up in a family that didn`t recognize that in me. I have flourished and that part of me is alive and thriving now.

Q: What is one of the funniest incidents that occurred in one of your yoga classes?
A: This happened just last night, in fact. I just put my students into supported supta setu bandha over bolsters and had finished adjusting each one of them. The room became quiet and still. The students were going in deep. All of a sudden, someone`s cell phone started to ring. One young woman rolled off her bolster, reached for her purseand instead of shutting it off, she answered it "I'm in a yoga class (duh) I'll call you back". Then she sheepishly apologized. I just laughed out loud and reminded the students to leave their phones outside. I felt as if I had finally reached the big time!
