Professional Background

Yoga Background
In 1994 I took my first yoga class. Although I loved it, I had no clue then that my entire world would be so transformed by yoga. Jonny Kest was my teacher then. He taught Ashtanga-vinyasa style classes: the heat, the breath, and his motivation were new and incredible to me. I took class as often as I was able to go. Everything began to change: my body was opening, I was thinking about my spirituality, and I was making new friends from yoga. A yoga community was developing in Detroit. It was very exciting: we all shared a lot together: meditating, practicing, and getting together socially. Mitchel (my brother) and I were very much involved with this community and it felt really right for some time then.
I took a teacher training with Jonny Kest. I thought I would take the course for my own personal practice. During the 10 weeks, I realized that I had something to offer others ~ my passion for yoga.

In 1997 I moved to Vail, Colorado. I was still practicing and teaching Ashtanga Vinyasa style yoga although I found myself doing lots of variations of the primary series. I began taking classes with Jamie Turner Allison. What a gift from God to meet Jamie and be introduced to Anusara. Jamie has been an incredible teacher for me for almost five years. Her very clear and precise explanation of the Universal Principles changed my practice in so many ways. I have so much gratitude to Jamie for sharing Anusara with me. We get together in Vail every Sunday (when we are in town) and have rockin practices together. I took my first class with John in 1999 at Inner Harmony. It was an incredible week. John blew me away with his incredibly open heart, teaching skills and humility. Each time I study with John, my heart is touched in deeper ways. John and Anusara yoga inspire me to be the best person and yoga teacher I can be. Everything resonates at a deeper level than I ever knew existed in me. I feel a strong heartfelt connection to my family, friends, students, and the whole universe. I am such a happier person now than I was before I began my journey with Anusara. Whenever I go to workshop or another Anusara yoga studio around the country, I immediately feel connected to fellow members of the Kula. I am so thankful to have found the style of yoga that resonates with me so much.

I have an unlimited amount of gratitude to John. He will always hold the highest seat of my teacher. I am also very blessed to have such a loving and supportive family. I am honored to be Mitchel`s sister ( a name I am often called), for he is not only my little brother but a great teacher and inspiration to me.

Questions and Answers

Q: What other hobbies do you have aside from yoga practice?
A: I love to be outside (Colorado is quite the playground): hiking, bike riding, watching nature. I love eating and cooking; especially being in the kitchen with my mom and brother. Swimming in the ocean, traveling, chanting, reading, and of course, spending time with friends- laughing and TALKING.

Q: What is the title of a book that you have read recently that you could strongly recommend?
A: THE DEATH OF VISNU by Manil Suri

Q: What is one of your all-time favorite movies?
A: Not my all-time favorite, that is too hard, but I love the movie Legends of the Fall.

Q: What is one place that you would like to visit in the world? Why?
A: Someday I plan to go to Cambodia to visit Ankor Wat.

Q: What's your favorite color?
A: Red.

Q: What is one of the funniest incidents that occurred in one of your yoga classes?
A: Last winter, at the health club I teach, someone walked into the room to get something and then dropped it. It made a loud sound and then suddenly a dog began to bark! One of the students had brought her Yorkie into class in a bag. I laughed and said that we should have had the dog demo downward facing dog pose. It was extra fun because my parents were in the class and they love dogs.
